First Nations Scholarships
for the GDLP

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Australian College of Applied Professions (ACAP) and the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) are committed to creating opportunities for First Nations Victorian law graduates through industry-led learning and genuine connections to the profession.
In 2024, ACAP and the LIV are expanding these opportunities by offering a GDLP scholarship valued at 100% of course fees to an eligible First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) student each intake.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Australia’s First Nations history has determined the challenges that come with obtaining official ‘Confirmation of Identity’ and whilst identity is unique and sacred to everyone, for the purpose of the GDLP First Nations scholarship, all applicants are required to provide proof of identity and heritage with written confirmation of Community recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity. Proof may be established with reference to the Local Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation or local decision-making group.
Eligibility also includes First Nations applicants who have:
- Completed a bachelor’s degree or higher in Law leading to admission to the legal profession OR
- No more than two academic subjects to complete in a bachelor’s degree, or higher in Law, of which neither are Priestley 11 subjects (1).
AND
- Are completing these units while undertaking the PLT course; AND
- Has received the prior permission of the Admitting Authority (VLAB) to commence the PLT course.
WHAT TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPLICATION?
You will be required to supply the following documents to support your application:
- Evidence of First Nations status – written confirmation of community recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity. Proof may be established with reference to the Local Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation or local decision-making group.
- Academic transcript of your Australian law degree or equivalent OR if you have subjects still to complete, please also attach proof of enrolment in the remainder of the Australian law degree subjects with expected year and month of final completion of results.
- A current resume including two referees and relevant contact information.
- A brief statement (300 to 500 words) of your goals, describing your purposes for undertaking practical legal training, leading to admission to legal practice. Please also include any other relevant information including details of community or extra-curricular activities, aspirations, or persuasive reasons for your application that are consistent with the purpose and criteria of the Scholarship.
